Softball Uses Extra-Inning Win to Secure Split to Continue Spring Games

Saints Shook Off 5-4 Loss to Bellarmine with 4-3 Extra-Inning Win Over Brown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MADEIRA BEACH, FL – Siena Softball continued a busy weekend at The Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Florida with a pair of one-run decisions against non-league foes. The Saints (5-4) dropped a 5-4 decision to Bellarmine before picking up a 4-3 extra-inning win over Brown on Friday.

Bellarmine 5, Siena 4

Facing the Knights for the third time this season in a non-conference rubber match of sorts, The Saints rebounded from an early deficit, with Bellarmine striking first with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first. A solo home run in the top of the third gave the designated visitors insurance before the Saints counted with a long ball of their own.

In a game which featured as many walks as it did hits, Siena used a trio of walks to load the bases in the bottom of the third for junior Ashley Giampolo to launch a grand slam over the left field fence to give Siena a 4-2 lead. Despite forcing Bellarmine's starting pitcher from the game, the Saints could do no more damage, with the Knights turning a crooked inning of their own with three runs in the top of the fifth via a sacrifice fly and a 2 RBI double.

Led by four consecutive strikeouts from redshirt-sophomore pitcher Alissa Eimont, Siena wiped away the final two innings defensively, but would not get anything going on the other side of the ball.  Bellarmine held a 6-3 hits advantage, with Giampolo, sophomore Emma Petersen, and freshman Gracie Goewey each recording knocks. Goewey (1-3) took the loss in the circle with four strikeouts and five earned runs allowed, while Eimont struck out five in 2.1 innings of relief.

Siena 4, Brown 3 (8)

Siena rebounded in the nightcap to triumph over Brown in its first meeting with the Bears since 2018. The game ended with the Saints' second 4-3 eight-inning win of the year by way of Isabella Pardo putting the ball into play for the winning run to come in.

Siena's seven-game weekend at The Spring Games continues on Saturday, February 24 with the Saints face off against St. Bonaventure for the first time since 2001 at 11 AM and against Cornell at 4 PM.
