Back-to-Back: Women’s Distance Medley Relay Repeats as MAAC Champions

Siena Opened MAAC Indoor Track Championships with Gold Medal for Third Straight Year

NEW YORK, NY – A reputation of success and the expectation of performing well in distance events was furthered for Siena Indoor Track on Saturday to begin the 2024 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. Siena claimed victory in the women's distance medley relay event for the second straight year to begin the two-day event at the Nike Armory Track & Field Center in New York City.

After setting a MAAC Championship record with its first-ever conference title in a relay event last year, the Saints claimed gold in the women's DMR for the second straight year, with the team of junior Claire Gardner, senior Gabby DeAngelis, junior Keira Flaherty, and graduate student Madeleine Hesler running a time of 11:55.70 to claim first place by over eight seconds. The win gives the program three straight years with at least one MAAC champion during indoor track season, and marks the program's third MAAC title in any relay event.

The Saints also qualified several runners for finalist heats on Sunday, highlighted by fifth year Matthew Laframboise running the top time of the night in the men's 800 at 1:53.95. Flaherty finished second in the women's preliminary round with a mark of 2:18.56 to move on to Sunday as well.

Siena featured four athletes qualify for the final round in the mile, with sophomore Tyler Greene (4:14.68) and Gardner (5:07.58) each taking third in their respective preliminaries. Fifth year Tommy Anderson (4:16.71) and junior Luke Tkaczyk (4:15.06) placed sixth and seventh, respectively, to also qualify on the men's side.

Senior Christopher DeForest led the Green and Gold in the 5,000 with a tenth-place finish, while junior Julia Caputo finished eighth to score a point for the women. The men's distance medley relay team of freshman Tyler Tkaczyk, freshman Marcus Homa, sophomore PJ Dauer, and freshman Connor Thomas finished seventh with a time of 10:33.02 to score two points.

The Siena women sit in sixth place through five scored events, while the men are in eighth through six events.

Siena will wrap the 2024 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday, February 25 beginning at 5 PM.
