Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, RI – Siena Water Polo couldn't have asked for a much better start to its 2023-24 season. Under the direction of fifth year head coach
Alex Williams, the Saints completed their first 2-0 start to a campaign since 2007 with a 15-7 win over Saint Francis (PA) and a 9-7 triumph over Salem at the Catherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday.
Pairing ten returning letterwinners with ten newcomers, the Green and Gold recorded their first-ever victory over the Red Flash in eight tries, while getting back in the win Column against the Tigers for the first time in four years. The team's 2-0 start to play stands with the 2007 season – which produced a record 15 wins – as the only 2-0 starts in school history.
Siena 15, Saint Francis (PA) 7
After falling by four goals or less in each of the previous seven meetings since 2017, Siena started strong with three of the first four goals, and held a 7-3 lead at the intermission. A true team effort which featured eight different goal scorers saw the Saints produce four goals in each of the final two quarters and score their most goals against a Division I opponent since 2019.
Freshman
Catherine Williamson led the way with four goals, while classmate
Quincy Frommelt produced a hat trick entirely in the second half. Sophomore
Audrey Lacey and freshman
Rebecca Currie added two goals apiece, while senior
Sydney Arnold, junior
Cece White, sophomore
Samantha Varrie, and sophomore
Parker Thomas also got on the board. Thomas and Currie each recorded three steals, while senior goalkeeper
Caroline Behr and freshman
Maggie Frye had six saves apiece in split time.
Siena 9, Salem 7
Returning to the pool for an afternoon match to round out the first of two days of competition, the Green and Gold again got out to a hot start, led by freshman
Lucia Fernandez Caballero's first half hat trick. After trailing, 5-3, at the half, Salem responded with three of four goals in the third, but could not overcome three late Siena scores.
Caballero's three goals led the way, while Lacey tallied a pair more and Williamson, White, Frommelt, and freshman
Ava Pawlik each added one. Behr added five more saves, while Frye had three in split time.
Siena will next aim to complete its best start to a season in program history when its faces off with Austin College (8 AM) and Bucknell (2 PM) to continue the Bruno Classic at Blodgett Pool in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Sunday, February 4.
