Final Stats
Sophomore transfer Adam Guinn had three hits and two RBI, and senior Zach Hartman tossed six solid innings to pick up his first win of the season as Siena cruised past Fairleigh Dickinson 11-6 in Brooklyn Sunday.
The Saints completed a three-game sweep of the Knights, and after entering the weekend with an 0-9 record against top-flight competition, they exit it showing they will be a force to reckon with regionally.
Dan Paolini and Larry Balkwill drove in runs in Siena's first at bat, and although the Knights would tie the game with two runs in the second, the Saints never trailed the rest of the way.
Paolini and senior first baseman Kevin Quaranto were walked seven times combined Sunday, and 13 times on the weekend as the FDU staff elected to pitch around the dangerous middle of Siena's batting order.
The rest of the lineup stepped up to the challenge.
Guinn had five of his six hits on the season this weekend, and moved up to the five spot in the batting order.
Leadoff man John Rooney, the two-time defending MAAC Rookie of the Week, had two hits and two RBI in the series finale. Balkwill ended with two hits, and each of the bottom three slots in the lineup hit safely.
Hartman worked six innings, allowing four runs and eight hits while striking out five. He was relieved by Ryan Poplawski who went the final three innings to pick up his second save of the weekend. Poplawski sacrificed five hits and two runs.
FDU out-hit Siena for the second straight game, 13-11, but could not overcome four multi-run innings. The Saints put the game away with four runs in the eighth, a rally highlighted by Guinn's two-RBI single to center.
Siena heads back south for a two-game series at Stetson Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to play four games at Dayton starting on Friday.
