Siena softball completed a landmark season Sunday in Jersey City, sweeping Saint Peter's 6-0 and 8-3. The opener saw Siena freshman Jessika - Jo Sandrini win her 12th game of the season, giving her sole possession of the program record.
Sandrini didn't just win the game, she cruised through it, allowing just four hits in a complete-game shutout that also featured seven strikeouts against just two walks. She finished arguably the most impressive freshman season in Siena (20-25, 8-8 MAAC) softball history with a 12-9 record, a 2.99 ERA, and as one of Siena's offensive catalysts (.387 batting average, .532 on-base percentage).
The offense in game one was just as impressive, banging out eight hits. MAAC Player of the Year candidate Shannon Jones slammed her tenth home run of the season with a two-run shot in the first inning, while Sandrini drove in a pair with a fifth-inning double. Alyssa Sceppaguercio and Nastasha Powlowsky also drove in a run each in Siena's two-run seventh inning.
The Saints jumped out to a quick lead in game two as well, with Mandy Ferro's first-inning single scoring Sandrini. Siena would tack on three more in the fifth, as Sceppaguercio, Powlowsky, and Kristen Borsella drove in one run apiece.
However, the Peahens would not go down quietly. Saint Peter's scored three runs in their half of the sixth, whittling Siena's lead to just 4-3. The Siena offense came alive one last time in 2011, though, scoring four runs in the seventh to assure starter Amanda Filippazzo of her seventh win of the year.
Powlowsky led the offense with three of Siena's 15 hits in game two. Sandrini, Jones, and Kayla Kaminsky also had multi-hit games, while freshman Darcy Gardner picked up the first save of her collegiate career.
While the year did not end with a MAAC Tournament berth, Siena's 20 wins in 2011 were the most since the 2005 season, and their eight victories in MAAC play were the most since 2003. The program graduates just four seniors, returning four of five pitchers and eight position players with 20 or more starts this past season.
