Life has thrown Kyle Downey more curves than Roy Halladay over the past decade, but the Fairport High graduate never buckles.

He lost his father and changed school districts at 13. His college basketball coach left after his sophomore season. And in his first three years at Division I Siena, he endured three major injuries.

His favorite quote is "Don't give up," made famous by North Carolina State basketball coach Jim Valvano during his famous fight with cancer. But perhaps his favorite lyric should come from that inimitable group, Tubthumping:

I get knocked down

But I get up again

You're never gonna keep me down
