Saints Strong in the Net

May 4, 2012

By: Mark Singelais, Albany Times Union

Siena lacrosse senior goalkeeper Tom Morr spent a month of high school unable to talk, see or move.

During his freshman year at Chaminade, Morr contracted viral encephalitis, which affected his brain. He was bedridden in the intensive care unit at Long Island Jewish Hospital.

"It was awful," Morr said. "I give all the credit in the world to my parents. They were next to me every single day. Even though the doctors thought I wasn't able to hear anything, they were reading the paper to me, playing music and really kept me going."

The virus ran its course and Morr was able to resume a standout career that is coming to a close this month, at least at the amateur level.

He will lead the top-seeded Saints into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament that starts Friday at Marist.

Defending champion Siena (10-4 overall, 6-0 MAAC) will take on the host and fourth-seeded Red Foxes (6-7, 3-3) in a semifinal at 7:30 p.m.

Should the Saints prevail, they'll face either No. 2 Detroit or No. 3 Canisius in the championship game on Sunday at noon.
