Feb. 3, 2015 LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Lacrosse Head Coach John Svec has announced his program's captains for the upcoming season. Seniors Richie Hurley, Jake Kissick, Ryan Mallon and Conor Prunty have been appointed to lead the 2015 Saints both on and off the field. Hurley and Mallon also served as captains of the 2014 MAAC Champion Saints as juniors.
"These young men have worked extremely hard and been leaders both on and off the field for quite a while," noted Svec, who enters his fourth season at the helm.
Hurley was recently named the MAAC's Preseason Player of the Year. The Setauket, N.Y. native was the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year last spring after scoring a MAAC record 82 points including a Siena record 48 assists. Hurley ranked fourth nationally in assists per game (2.82) and sixth in points per game (4.82) en route to being named just the program's fifth-ever USILA All-American Honorable Mention.
"Richie is a two-time captain and that's certainly a benefit to the guys coming in," said Svec.
A native of Cohasset, Mass., Kissick was named a Second Team All-MAAC selection last spring. He started all 17 games on close defense last season, picking up 21 groundballs and causing 10 turnovers. Kissick enters his senior year having made 38 career appearances including 32 starts with 41 groundballs and 20 caused turnovers.
"Jake has continued to improve on the field and his hard work has made that possible," commented Svec. "The more he improves, the more his teammates improve because of his work ethic. They have to work hard to keep up with him and that makes us all better."
Mallon saw action in 10 games and made two starts at midfield last spring for the Saints. The New Fairfield, Conn. product tallied four points on two goals and two assists and added 25 groundballs and eight caused turnovers. Mallon has totaled 89 groundballs over his first three seasons and currently ranks tied for sixth in program history with 26 caused turnovers.
"Ryan has a great sense of responsibility and works extraordinarily hard to better his teammates," added Svec.
Named a Preseason All-MAAC selection, Prunty was a First Team All-MAAC honoree last spring after ranking second on the Saints with 37 points on 26 goals and 11 assists. The Yorktown Heights, N.Y. native has played in all 50 of the Saints' games over his first three seasons and ranks 20th in program history with 108 career points.
"Conor has played an important role on the field since he was an underclassman," proclaimed Svec. "His ability to communicate to and care about his teammates shows in his play and amongst them."
Siena's quad captains will look to lead a program which posted an 11-6 overall record including a perfect 6-0 mark in the MAAC last year en route to capturing the program's third MAAC Championship.
The Saints open their season Saturday when they face perennial national power Syracuse at 4 p.m. at the Carrier Dome in a game that will be televised throughout the New York on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel. The Orange are ranked fourth in the USILA Preseason Coaches' Poll.
