May 20, 2016 LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Soccer Head Coach Cesar Markovic has been named an assistant coach for the Puerto Rican National Team. Markovic will make his international coaching debut Sunday at noon when Puerto Rico faces the U.S. Men's National Team in a friendly in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The match will be televised on Fox Sports 1 which is available on Time Warner Cable Channel 400 in the Capital Region, Channel 219 on DirecTV and Channel 150 on Dish Network.
"It's an exciting and new opportunity for me that is only going to enhance my experience at Siena," said Markovic, who recently completed his third year as head coach of the Saints. "I'm extremely grateful to the Puerto Rican Football Federation, head coach Jack Stefanowski, and Siena College for giving me the opportunity to do this."
Markovic was appointed to his post by Stefanowski, who previously served as an assistant coach under Markovic for eight seasons at both Saint Peter's (2000-03) and Stony Brook (2004-07). Markovic will serve in a technical role with the Puerto Rican National Team, overseeing scouting, technical aspects and various phases of training and competition.
Following the historic, first-ever meeting between Puerto Rico and the United States in a full international match, Markovic and El Huracan Azul will continue preparations for the second round of qualifying for the 2017 Caribbean Cup. Puerto Rico heads to Grenada for a qualifying match on June 1st, before returning home to host Antigua and Barbuda June 4th as they look to advance to the third round. The top-four teams qualify for next summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Markovic has guided the Saints to 25 wins in his first three seasons leading the program. Siena posted an 8-10-3 overall record last fall including a 5-4-1 league mark, and advanced to the conference semifinals after winning two matches in a MAAC Tournament for the first time in program history. In 21 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Markovic has recorded 191 wins including 133 in 16 years at the Division I level and led his teams to four NCAA Tournament appearances.
