NEW YORK, NY – Siena's track program saw it's fourth school record of the 2019-20 campaign and second during indoor track season fall Saturday evening, as the Saints kicked off action at the 2020 MAAC Indoor Track Championships at the New Balance Armory & Track in New York City.
Senior Carolyn Pellegrini etched her name in Siena's indoor track record books during the running of the women's 5000-meter final, clocking a new program record time of 17:15.82 to finish in third place. The mark bested current senior Sydney Johnson's previous record of 17:26.19 run in 2019, and now stands as the second-fastest overall time for a Siena women's runner in the event, combined with outdoor marks. Pellegrini's time was also good enough to qualify her for the upcoming ECAC/IC4A meet, giving the Saints four qualifying times on the year.
The Loudonville, NY native was joined by three of her teammates in finishing inside the top-10 in the event, with Johnson (seventh, 17:50.83) and freshman Elaine Atanasova (eighth, 17:54.66) also earning points, and senior Camryn Johnson (18:05.03) and junior Carissa Kahn (18:18.61) following behind.
The Saints also saw points earned on the men's side in the event, with sophomore Owen Walker running a time of 14:53.34 to finish in eighth place. Junior Aidan Canavan (15:20.35) placed 15th, with freshman Peter Alden (15:20.35) took 17th.
Both Siena squads also took part in the distance medley relay events to round out the evening, with each placing inside the top-3. The women's pairing of juniors Morgan Serkes & Holly Bednarek and sophomores Julia Bryant & Olivia Lomascolo placed second with a time of 12:06.45, while the men's group of junior Jacob Greski and freshmen Ryan Famiglietti, Matthew LaFramboise & Aidan Gillooley (10:10.36) took third.
Earlier in the day, the Green and Gold also saw multiple runners qualify for final heats during a slew of trial events that were run to kick off the meet, which was held at the New Balance Armory for the 17th consecutive year.
LaFramboise placed seventh in the men's mile with a time of 4:20.13 to advance, while junior Monica Strain took 10th in the women's mile with a time of 5:09.52. Junior Ryan Holland placed ninth (1:58.41) to pace the Saints in the men's 800, while classmate Allison Hill took 15th (2:25.42) to lead the women.
Overall, the Siena women picked up 17 points in day one action to finish tied for fifth overall with Iona, while the men sit in seventh with seven points. Monmouth (91) leads action on the men's side by a wide margin, while Rider (47) has a slight lead on the women's end entering the final day of competition.
Siena will look to make up ground in day two of the 2020 MAAC Championships on Sunday, February 23. Action begins at 4:00 PM, with the Saints participating in eight final events.
