'A second father': Siena community mourns loss of men's lacrosse coach Liam Gleason

The lacrosse world has lost a legend in the making. Siena University head coach Liam Gleason died Wednesday at the age of 41 from injuries sustained in an accident at his home on Sunday, according to the university.

Gleason had coached Siena's men's lacrosse team for seven years and was entering his eighth season with the Saints early next year.

The program had been building back up under Gleason and it culminated this past spring with the first MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 11 years.

"The Siena community is devastated by this unspeakable tragedy," said Athletic Director John Argenio.

From the moment Gleason arrived in the Capital Region, the Long Island native started touching the lives of all he encountered.

"I think it as a second father, personally, like my father away from home because, freshman year, you come up here, you don't know anybody, and here's this big guy, and he's yelling at you," said Colby LeBlanc, Siena senior midfielder. "But I really felt like family since the first day I was on campus."
