Siena Cross Country continued their winning ways at the Rider Invitational. The men's team won their second race in 12 years, while the women finished fifth.
"Today was the first day we had everyone lined up together so we were excited to start making progress towards our championship goals," said head coach John Kenworthy. "Both teams made significant strides compared to this meet last year. Anytimes you win a meet against MAAC opponents you walk away happy, but there were many more important performances individually that we are focusing on at this point. "
The men's side cruised to a victory with three men finishing in the top 10. Freshman Evans Kibet set the a new freshman 8K record with his time of 24:44.93. He was the first Saint to finish and second overall as his time also now sits fifth for the men's fastest times overall. Senior Nick Cornine was fourth overall with a personal record time of 24:50.36. Rounding out our three men in the top 10 was senior Paolo Fiore who finished in 25:02.10.
William Randall set a personal record of 25:13.17 as he was the fourth Saint to cross the finish line. Andrew Canavan rounded out the scoring for Siena with his personal record finish of 25:19.24. Freshman Michael Rautter is now second on the all-time freshman 8k list when he finished in a personal best time of 25:20.07.
The women were led by sophomore Sarah Forman who finished ninth overall with a personal best 22:17.51 which is also the second fastest 6K time by a female at Siena. Freshman Anya Schmitt found herself fourth on the freshman 6K list as she set a personal record time of 22:58.14. Kelly Pasko was the third Saint to cross the finish line as he finished in 23:20.05.
Senior Shannon Bauer came through the finish line at 23:24.56. Freshman Carolyn Pellegrini set a personal record for herself as she rounded out the scoring for Siena with a time of 23:30.52.
"Tonight the men showed we have the pieces in the place to be very good later this season," Kenworthy stated. "The women's group has made huge gains in the past year. We have depth like we've never had and that is going to pay off come November, but for now we are going back to work. There is a lot of time until the championships so we will put this in the past and keep grinding everyday."
The Saints hit the course against on Saturday, Oct. 1st when they travel to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to race at the Paul Short Run. Race is set for 9:30 a.m.
