Siena Athletics Hall of Fame
Pottenburgh was the tallest player in Siena history at the time, standing at 6-9. He was known as a good rebounder and tenacious competitor. In his first year playing with the Indians he averaged a very modest 6.1 points per game for a team that went 24-7 on the season. While spending three seasons as the team’s starting center, he starred in an NBA Exhibition game where he had 18 of the team’s 54 points and aided Siena’s defeated of No. 11 Seton Hall, which led to a No. 11 national ranking. During his senior season, he boosted his scoring up to 11.4 points per game. He was selected in the 5th round (42nd pick) of the 1954 NBA Draft by the Syracuse Nationals, and also played one year of baseball for Siena. He died on September 9, 2016, at the age of 83.
