With a 166-77 career record and a .683 winning percentage, he guided the team to their first national postseason appearance with an NIT bid in 1988, and their first NCAA Tournament appearance and victory in 1989. The 1987-88 Siena team won the North Atlantic Conference regular season title while the 88-89 squad won the conference tournament and upset Stanford, ranked 13th nationally, in a program-defining win during the first round of the “Dig Dance”. Deane also took the 1990-91 Siena team to the NIT following a tie for the MAAC Regular Season Championship and concluded his time at Siena with a deep run into the 1994 NIT, taking the Saints to the semifinal round at Madison Square Garden and a third place finish. Deane coached nine players who finished their careers as 1,000 point scorers and six (Matt Brady ‘87, HOF ’93; Steve McCoy ’89, HOF ’94; Jeff Robinson ’90, HOF 96; Marc Brown ’91, HOF ’98; Lee Matthews ’93, HOF ’99; Bruce Schroeder ’92, HOF ’01) who are enshrined along side him in the Siena Athletics Hall of Fame. A career basketball coach, Deane left Siena for Marquette and went on to serve as the head coach of the Golden Eagles (1994-99), Lamar (1999-03), and Wagner (2003-10), finishing his coaching career as an assistant coach at James Madison (2012-17). He also guided Marquette and Lamar to NCAA Tournament appearances, and was inducted into the Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. Additionally, Deane was inducted into the SUNY Potsdam Athletics Hall of Fame in 1984, and the Rockland County Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993
