Gundermann played forward and guard on Siena Basketball teams from 1951-55 and was known for his competitive spirit and hustle. During the 1952-53 season Gundermann was moved up from jayvees in mid-season and never looked back after that. His two greatest moments at Siena came when he through an in-bounds pass to fellow hall of fame Bill Kirsch when Kirsch made his famous shot at Madison Square Garden, and when he played in a six-overtime game against Niagara in 1953. He was a role player throughout his entire career at Siena, who showed vast improvement as every season went on. A captain of the team during his senior season, he was named to the Honorable Mention All-East Team following his junior season and was drafted by the NBA’s St. Louis Hawks following graduation. He was also a member of Siena's men's golf team. Gundermann passed away on January 26, 2023 at the age of 89.
