Siena Athletics Hall of Fame
Generally accepted as one of the most astute basketball coaches in the business. Cunha's teams from 1941-65 compiled an overall record of 246-225. The Indians were nationally ranked from 1947-52 and over this span had an amazing 115-33 record against some of the best opposition in the nation. His clubs were ranked in the top ten on defense in the U.S. from 1948-54. Cunha led the 1950 Siena squad that posted a 28-5 record, won the NCIT, ranked second nationally in defense and became Siena’s first ever team to play in Madison Square Garden. Aside from leading the “Cunhamen” on the court, he was responsible for helping to form the Middle Eastern College Athletic Association (MECAA) in 1955 and served as part of Siena’s athletic administration. He also began Siena’s cross country (1955-63) and baseball (1947-49; 1956-65) programs and was Siena’s fourth Athletic Director from 1963 – 1965. He died on July 7, 1968 at the age of 56.
