A daunting 6-7 forward, Matthews scored 1,365 points from 1989-93 and graduated as the program’s all-time leader in rebounds (1,037). He currently ranks third in career boards and is one of only three players in program history to score 1,000 points and eclipse the 1,000-rebound mark. Matthews still ranks first in career field goal percentage (58.1 %) and second all-time in blocks (179).

Matthews made 122 career appearances for Siena, which experienced one of it’s most successful stretches while he was on the court (76-46). A four-time MAAC Player of the Week selection, he was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team in 1990, was a Second Team All-MAAC selection for the 1991-92 season and a First Team honoree during his senior season. Matthews as also an All-East Honorable Mention selection by Eastern Basketball and Basketball Times during the 1991-92 campaign and a USBWA District 2 honoree in 1993. Matthews aided Siena in winning the 1991 MAAC Regular Season Championship during just their second year in the league, and advance to win two games in the 1991 NIT. Matthews went on to play professional basketball for several years following graduation, concluding his playing career in 2006.
