Siena Athletics Hall of Fame
Torncello captained the Indians in his senior year (1950-51) but collected most of his points in prior seasons. He used his set shots to average 9.8 points as a sophomore. He was known for shooting mostly on the run and for being the most popular and fastest member of his team. He was part of the 1950 Siena squad that posted a 28-5 record, won the NCIT, ranked second nationally in defense and became Siena’s first ever team to play in Madison Square Garden. Torncello also starred in baseball at Siena and went on serve as a high school coach & referee in basketball and baseball. He was inducted as a part of the inaugural class of the Watervliet High School Hall of Fame in 2008. He died at the age of 90 on March 14, 2016.
