Arguably the greatest football player in the history of both Siena and the MAAC Football League, Greene was a three-time Associated Press All-American and was selected as the MAAC Player of the Year three times, in 1995, 1996, & 1997. He graduated as the NCAA I-AA career leader in rushing with 5,415 yards and became only the second player in NCAA I-AA history to win three consecutive rushing titles (1995, 1996, 1997). Greene also became the first player in NCAA I-AA history to win three consecutive all-purpose yard titles (1995, 1996, 1997), finishing his career with 6,975 rushing yards and 50 total touchdowns. Greene set the NCAA I-AA record for most rushing in a game as a junior, when he rushed for 379 yards against St. John’s (NY) on November 2, 1996. To-date, Greene remains inside the top-20 in all-time NCAA FCS (formerly I-AA) rushing, his single-game performance ranks fourth all-time, and his yards per-game totals in 1997 & 1996 rank fifth and sixth all-time, respectively.
He finished in the top-10 of the Walter Payton Award voting (NCAA I-AA Player of the Year) on three occasions during his career (1995-97) and received the Walter Camp Merit Award in 1998. He also received three Heisman Trophy Award votes in 1997. Greene went on to embark on a highly successful professional playing career in Italy, playing for the Giants Bolzano from 2000-11. He ended his career as the league’s all-time leading rusher with 15,638 yards in just 91 career games. A four-time League MVP, his team won the Italian Super Bowl in 2009, and he was selected to the Italian League Football Hall of Fame in 2011 as part of its inaugural class. A native of Connecticut, Greene was selected by the Hartford Courant as one of the state’s Top 100 Athletes of the 20th Century in 1999.
